How Are Parents and Teachers Responsible for the Education of Children and Youths?
Key Concept: The Word must be taught mediately and parents and teachers are key to that end (Divine Providence 172).
The Word must needs be taught mediately through parents, teachers, books, and especially the reading of it. Nevertheless it is not taught by these, but by the Lord through them (Divine Providence 172:6).
No one can ever fight against evils and falsities until he has learned to know what evil and falsity are, and therefore not until he has been instructed (Arcana Coelestia 1661:2).
The spiritual have not a perception of good and truth like the celestial have, but instead of this they have conscience, which is formed from the goods and truths of faith which they have imbibed from infancy from their parents and masters, and afterwards from the doctrine of faith into which they were born. They who have no perception of good and truth have to be confirmed by knowledges (Arcana Coelestia 2831:1).
These truths, that relate to charity toward the neighbor and to love to the Lord, must be learned before it is possible for a man to be regenerated; and must also be acknowledged and believed; and, in so far as they are acknowledged, believed, and ingrafted in the life, so far the man is regenerated, and in so far they are at the same time implanted in the man's natural, in which they are as in their own ground. They are first implanted therein through instruction by parents and teachers; next from the Word of the Lord; and afterwards through the man's own reflection about them (Arcana Coelestia 3762:2).
From childhood to early youth communication is opened with the interior natural by learning what is decent, orderly, and honorable, both by instructions from parents and teachers and by studies. And from youth to early manhood communication is opened between the natural and the rational by learning the truths and goods of civil and moral life, and especially the truths and goods of spiritual life, through the hearing and reading of the Word (Arcana Coelestia 5126:3).
